Marcia Sokolowski is the Co-Director of Ethics at Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care and a member of the University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics. She is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. Previously, she was the Clinical Ethicist at Bloorview Children’s Rehab and Trillium Health Centre, following a clinical ethics fellowship at Baycrest Centre. Her former career was in clinical psychology. She is registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario.
Marcia has a Masters level diploma in Assessment and Counseling from the University of Toronto, a Masters degree in Philosophy from the University of Guelph, and a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Waterloo. Marcia's Philosophy's Masters thesis debated the moral justification of current use of the data that has arisen out of Nazi medical science. Marcia's doctorate dissertation examined the moral justification of use of advance directives or living wills with the Alzheimer's population.
Marcia’s current research/practice areas in ethics includes: war trauma, end of life issues, use of palliative sedation, feminist ethics, neuroethics, interdisciplinary ethics and organizational ethics. Advance care planning, sexuality issues amongst residents with dementia in long-term care, and ethical issues related to Alternate Level of Care (ALC) are of particular interest and focus for her.
